Case Study: Jack*

Jack* self-referred to WorkWell South Cumbria after graduating from Lancaster University with a degree in Politics and International Relations. Despite his academic success, Jack faced significant challenges in finding suitable employment due to his health condition. Living with ulcerative colitis made the prospect of work particularly stressful, as the unpredictability of his symptoms created uncertainty and anxiety. Recently, as his condition deteriorated, Jack underwent surgery to have a colostomy bag fitted, marking a significant adjustment in his daily life.

The impact on Jack’s mental wellbeing was considerable. He experienced heightened stress and anxiety, feeling that his condition was holding him back from reaching his full potential. Open to support, Jack was referred to our partners at Mind for their guided self-help course. Through regular sessions with his therapist, Jack has already begun to notice positive changes in his outlook and coping strategies, demonstrating his willingness to engage with his mental health journey.

In addition to his mental wellbeing, Jack was determined to improve his physical health and body image. He recognized that both his condition and the medications he was taking had affected his appearance, which in turn impacted his self-esteem and confidence. To support his goals, we referred Jack to our partners at Beats, where he is following a tailored fitness plan designed to reduce pain, rebuild strength, and enhance overall physical wellbeing.

Jack’s determination and resilience are evident in his proactive approach to gaining work experience. He has applied for a volunteering position to help him establish a routine, stay active, and gain practical experience while continuing his job search. Recently, he attended an interview for an administrative position in the Barrow area and is optimistic about the outcome.

Jack’s journey highlights his courage and commitment to overcoming personal and professional barriers. Through a combination of our mental health support, physical wellbeing initiatives, and practical employment opportunities, Jack is steadily building the confidence and skills he needs to progress toward meaningful work.
